While the approved accommodations have already been determined by the Disability Resource Center (DRC), students and instructors should discuss how accommodations will be implemented within the context of each course.
Accommodations are intended to provide equal access to course materials and learning experiences. Open communication between students, faculty and the DRC will help ensure accommodations are implemented effectively throughout the semester.
In addition to reviewing the general guidelines for having conversations about accommodations, you are welcome to utilize these worksheets to help facilitate your conversations.
Guidelines for Accommodation Conversations
Before the Discussion
Student responsibilities:
- Request Letter of Accommodation – early in the semester is encouraged, but you can request this any point in the semester
- Review the accommodation letter when it is sent out by the DRC
- Think about which of the approved accommodations may apply to the course
- Be prepared to discuss logistics, not the diagnosis
Faculty responsibilities:
- Carefully review the student accommodation letter
- Consider how accommodations may be implemented in the course
- Maintain the student's privacy and confidentiality
- Contact the DRC if there are questions about implementing an accommodation
Discussion Questions and Considerations
- Are there any existing class policies that interact with the accommodation, such as attendance requirements?
- How can the accommodations be implemented in the course in a reasonable manner?
- What are the expectations surrounding communication regarding use of accommodations?
- Example: When should a student connect with you if they need an extension on an assignment?
- Students are not required to disclose:
- Their diagnosis
- Medical history
- Medications
- Documentation, such as medical notes
- Details of their disability beyond what they choose to share
Conversation Starters
Students
- "I'd like to discuss how my accommodations will work in this class."
- "I wanted to introduce myself and discuss any logistics for my accommodations."
Faculty
- "Thank you for sharing your accommodation letter."
- "Let's talk about how we'll implement these accommodations in this course."
- "If any issues come up during the semester, please let me know so we can work with the DRC if needed."
If Challenges Arise
If either the student or instructor has questions about implementing an accommodation, contact the student’s Access Consultant immediately. The DRC can help identify solutions while ensuring accommodations are implemented appropriately.
