Fellowships and External Awards

Explore national fellowships and external awards you can apply for to further your education and research. Governments, foundations and other groups fund national fellowships. Applying will give you insights into who you are and what is most important to you. Whether or not you're selected as a recipient, you'll gain transferable skills and benefits just by completing the application process.

We actively recruit for the following national fellowships and scholarships:

Goldwater Undergraduate Scholarship
  • $7,500 for up to two years of undergraduate study in STEM fields.
  • Research experience required.
  • Up to four campus nominees per year.
  • Campus deadline: late October.

Truman Scholarship
  • Funding for graduate or professional school for juniors committed to making a difference through public service.
  • Selection based on academics, service potential and leadership.
  • Campus deadline: November.

Rhodes Scholarship
  • Graduate study at Oxford in all fields.
  • Applicants should demonstrate scholarly excellence, leadership and the will to “fight the world’s fight.”
  • Open to students from most countries.
  • Campus deadline: April.

Gates-Cambridge Scholarship
  • Post-undergraduate study at Cambridge University in all fields.
  • Applicants must show evidence of commitment to improving the lives of others.
  • Open to international students.
  • Deadline: mid-October.

Marshall Scholarship
  • Funding for graduate study anywhere in the U.K. in all fields.
  • Criteria are academic excellence, leadership and ambassadorial potential.
  • Campus deadline: April.

Mitchell Scholarship
  • One-year postgraduate study in Ireland in all fields.
  • Three selection criteria: scholarship, leadership and sustained commitment to service and community.
  • Campus deadline: April.

Udall Undergraduate Scholarship
  • $7,000 for undergraduates interested in conservation and environmental issues
  • Up to four campus nominees per year
  • Campus deadline: late January

Student Fulbright Program

Fund your study, research or teaching abroad with the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Learn more about the types of Fulbright awards for graduate students and students who recently completed a bachelor's degree. For more information contact etatkins@niu.edu.

Boren Scholarships

provide funding to study abroad in world regions critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad. For more information contact the Study Abroad Office at niuabroad@niu.edu.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

Students who receive Federal Pell Grant funding are eligible to apply for a  to study or intern abroad. For more information contact the Study Abroad Office at niuabroad@niu.edu.
