How to Apply

You can apply if you have a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or a degree in a related area with substantial mathematics coursework.

You’ll apply through the Graduate School.

Application deadlines:

  • Fall: August 1 (May 1 for international applicants)
  • Spring: December 10 (October 1 for international applicants)

Application Materials

Your application materials will include:

  • Two letters of recommendation from individuals who have a professional or academic relationship with you and can speak to your academic credentials and abilities to successfully complete a graduate-level program.
  • Statement of purpose (250-750 words) that outlines your preparation for graduate study, your goals for graduate school and beyond, and why you believe our program can best help you meet these goals.
  • Resume/CV indicating your professional and/or volunteer experience and other achievements.

Costs and Funding

Our competitive tuition and fees helps ensure an excellent return on the investment of your time and resources. Learn about additional funding opportunities for graduate students.

Assistantships and Fellowships

The math department offers teaching and research assistantships, as well as fellowships, that provide financial support (typically a tuition waiver and stipend), as well as career preparation.

Curriculum and Requirements

Our Master of Science degree in mathematics is available in four specializations:

  • Applied mathematics
  • Computational mathematics
  • Mathematics education
  • Pure mathematics

View an example program of study for each specialization.

You must also either pass a written comprehensive examination or prepare and give an oral defense of a thesis. You can complete the M.S. degree in two years of full-time study (or possibly one year, with the addition of the preceding and following summer terms).

Educator Licensure

You can seek certification to teach at the middle and secondary school level as you pursue your M.S. degree in mathematics. You can accomplish this by completing a student teaching practicum and taking courses from the College of Education. The additional requirements for teacher certification will take an extra year of full-time study to complete.

Faculty

Our faculty bring diverse experiences and scholarship from various areas in mathematical sciences. They’re committed to providing learning experiences that prepare students for career success.
