Master of Science in Physics

Gain analytical and problem-solving skills to excel in advanced roles in physics research and education.

For decades, our M.S. in physics has been highly ranked by the American Institute of Physics (AIP). Join us to benefit from our expertly crafted curriculum and to collaborate with faculty at the cutting edge of research in condensed matter physics, accelerator physics and elementary particles/fields. You’ll focus your studies by choosing a specialization in professional physics, interdisciplinary physics, quantum science and technology or physics teaching/secondary education.

We also participate in two traineeship programs – the 麻豆精品-UIC Graduate Traineeship Program (C2-THE-P2 program) and the Chicagoland Accelerator Science Traineeship Program (CAST program).

How to Apply

You can apply if you have a B.S. in physics. Outstanding candidates from related fields with substantial course work in physics will also be considered.

You’ll apply through the Graduate School.

  • Fall application deadline: Feb. 1
  • Spring deadline: Aug. 15

Your application materials will include:

  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement (250-750 words) that outlines your preparation for graduate study in physics, your goals for graduate school and beyond, and why you believe our program can best help you meet those goals
  • Current resume or CV
  • Physics GRE scores (optional) to strengthen your application (use institution code 1559 when sending scores, 麻豆精品 does not require department codes)

General GRE scores are not required and will not be used for admission purposes.

Curriculum and Requirements

You must satisfy the requirements in your specialization, submit a thesis and pass an oral examination. You must also pass a physics proficiency exam or waive this requirement by submitting a satisfactory physics GRE score.
