Transitioning from Collaborate to Zoom or Teams for Teaching

In an effort to reduce expense to the university, the Class Collaborate web conferencing tool will not be renewed. It will no longer be available as of August 8, 2026.

The good news is that both Zoom and Microsoft Teams are already integrated with Blackboard and can support a very similar approach for teaching. Here are some tips for getting started with Zoom or Teams, if you are used to using Collaborate.

Add a Link to the Integration in your Course

Collaborate was listed in the Details & Actions panel of your course; Zoom and Teams aren’t as visible. Fortunately, you can easily add a link to the Zoom or Teams integration in your course content so that students can go to the same link every time they join a class session. This makes it easier to find, so they aren’t hunting for different links.

  1. In your Blackboard course, click the plus (+) icon wherever it makes sense to place the link in your Course Content area.
  2. Click Content Market in the menu.
  3. Find the tool you plan to use and click the plus (+) icon in the lower right of its box.
    • For Zoom, choose the Zoom option.
    • For Teams, choose Microsoft Education.
  4. Make the new link visible to your students.

For both tools, students will access sessions and recordings through the same link.

Configure the Microsoft Education Integration for Teams Meetings

If you’re going to meet via Microsoft Teams, there’s a little bit of set up to do for the Microsoft Education integration. You only have to do this once for each course.

  1. Click the Microsoft Education link you added to your course content.
  2. Click the Continue setup
  3. Disable any of the apps you don’t intended to use. If you are only using Teams for meetings, then you need to leave the Meetings app enabled. You can disable the others.
  4. Click the Done

If you need to revisit the list of apps, you can access the Course Settings by clicking on your profile icon.

Scheduling Sessions

Neither Teams nor Zoom offer a “Course Room” like Collaborate did. However, you can set up a recurring session in advance or start sessions on an ad hoc basis.

Scheduling in Teams

  1. Click the New Meeting button to schedule a session.
  2. Provide a name for the session (optional – it defaults to the course name if you don’t enter a name).
  3. Add attendees to the session.
    • Add individual students for small group meetings.
    • Click Add entire class to send an Outlook calendar invite to everyone in the class. Use the Keep class in sync toggle to send invites to students who join the course late and remove invites for students who drop the course.
    • Change Attendee settings to Allow anyone in the course to join to allow students to join the session without sending them an Outlook calendar invite.
  4. Select a date and time for the session.
  5. Click Make recurring to repeat the session every week.
  6. Click the Save

You can also click the arrow next to the New Meeting button to launch a meeting via the Meet Now option. While this will create a meeting immediately, you will need to manually share a link to students, such as by posting it to the course outline or sending via an Announcement. You can copy the link when you start the meeting by clicking Get a link to share, or within the meeting by clicking the three dots and opening the Meeting info.

Once scheduled, you can edit the meeting to access the Meeting Options, where you can limit participant options (such as disabling the ability to present and use audio/video) and enable automatic recording and transcription.

Scheduling in Zoom

  1. Click the Schedule a New Meeting
  2. Select a date, time, and duration.
  3. Click the Recurring meeting checkbox to repeat the session every week.
  4. Configure additional settings for the meeting (optional).
    • Disable Waiting room to allow students to join the meeting directly.
    • Enable join before host to allow students to use the session without you.
    • Enable Record the meeting automatically to avoid having to start the recording manually.
    • Do not enable Only authenticated users can join meetings, as students do not have Zoom licenses and cannot log in to Zoom.

You can also use the Personal Meeting Room tab to launch ad hoc sessions. You will need to manually share the link to students, such as by posting it to the course outline or sending via an Announcement.

Tracking Attendance

Neither Zoom nor Teams will automatically record attendance results in Blackboard. Both do offer an attendance report that you can use to manually record attendance.

For Teams, you can access attendance reports from the meeting chat or from the Attendance tab in the integration.

For Zoom, you access reports from the Previous Meetings tab in the integration.

Sharing Recordings

Students can access recordings from the same link they used to access sessions.

For Teams, you will need to share each recording before students can access it via the integration. Go to the Recordings tab in the integration, click the three dots (…) menu in the recording preview, and click Share with class.

For Zoom, students will automatically have access to the recordings via the integration. If students are prompted to log in, you’ll need to remove authentication from recordings in your Zoom settings.
