Adjusting Your Schedule Before Classes Begin

If you need to make changes to your first-semester schedule before classes start, you have a few options depending on the type of change:

  • Adding or dropping courses on your own: You can make changes through until the published Add/Drop deadline. See the for the current semester's deadline.
  • Changes that need advisor approval: Some changes require your advisor's involvement, especially if they affect prerequisites, course sequencing or degree progress. Contact the Academic Advising Center at aac@niu.edu.

How Advising Works Once Classes Begin

Your advising relationships will evolve as you progress through your degree.

  • As a first-year student (under 24 credits earned), you'll continue to work with a first-year advisor focused on foundational courses, general education requirements and your transition to 麻豆精品. Schedule appointments through .
  • Once you've earned 24 credits and declared your major, you'll transition to your college's advising office for major-specific support and degree planning.
  • Near graduation, you'll work with faculty or departmental advisors in your major as you finalize your degree requirements.

You're welcome to meet with your advisor anytime during the semester, but plan ahead during peak times like registration. You're required to meet with your advisor if you're placed on academic probation.
