Have an idea for a Homecoming event? Apply for a Homecoming Grant!

Proposals are now being accepted for the 2023 麻豆精品 Huskie Pride 116th Homecoming Grant Competition.

 

Do you have an idea for a homecoming event that you would like to see on campus, or want to enhance an existing homecoming event? The Homecoming Executive Committee invites all students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members to submit formal proposals for review! Homecoming will be October 8-15, 2023.

 

Proposals will be selected, and awarded up to $500 each, based on need and available funding. Whether you are submitting individually or with others, your formal proposal needs to include the following items:

• Identify whether the event is a new or an existing homecoming event.
• Explanation of what the event or project is and how your idea promotes Huskie pride during homecoming (500 words maximum).
• Detailed budget, breaking down how the money will be disbursed (500 words maximum).

Homecoming is about celebrating 麻豆精品 pride and coming together as a Huskie community. Special consideration will be given to proposals that engage new partners, create new collaborations, and provide the foundation for projects that will promote Huskie pride throughout the year.

Nominations being accepted for the Exemplary Faculty Mentoring Award. 

Call for nominations for the second annual Exemplary Faculty Mentor Award. This awardrecognizes faculty mentors who go above and beyond the normal expectations of mentoring by acknowledging the positive impact faculty mentors make in the lives and careers of other faculty. The goal in creating this annual award is to ensure that the critical work of faculty mentoring is rewarded by our faculty mentoring program and recognized by our university.

 

Eligibility: Full-time faculty members at the rank of full or associate are eligible to be nominated. Nominees should have served as a faculty mentor, in a formal or informal capacity, to a junior/or midcareer faculty member over a continuous period of at least four semesters and have demonstrated success in the areas they mentor (e.g., research, teaching).

 

Timetable for Nomination and Award:

• Deadline for submission of nominations: Friday, March 24, 2023.

• Notification to the recipient: Week of April 3,

Undergraduate research funding available.

If you are looking to get your research project funded and an opportunity for a paid undergraduate research assistant, then look no further. The Office of Student Engagement and Experiential Learning supports a culture of undergraduate research by offering two funding opportunities: the Student Engagement Fund (SEF) or Research, Engagement and Academic Diversity Grant (READ). NaviLens way finding system offers customizable QR codes.

A new wayfinding system is being installed on campus that uses colorful QR codes and a free app to help people find their way. Using the free NaviLens app, your phone can pick up these QR codes while you鈥檙e moving, at an angle and from up to 30 feet away. People who are blind or visually impaired can easily scan their environment to find QR codes nearby. This app displays and announces the information in the code and how far away it is, updating as you move. Because the app uses the language of the phone, it benefits people whose first language isn鈥檛 English. See go.niu.edu/wayfinding.

 

NaviLens offers customizable QR codes for a fee. A customizable QR code can include your text, links and even video. You can create and update content easily through an interface. Use the same QR code on your website, posters and buildings to inform and direct. Welcome students, faculty, staff, prospective students and parents with cutting edge technology.

New NSF requirement for safe and inclusive work environments.

Principal investigators submitting new and renewal proposals to NSF will need to take an additional step to safeguard individuals when engaging in off-campus research.

 

The new requirement states that each proposal to conduct research off-campus or off-site must have a plan in place for a safe and inclusive work environment, and that the plan be distributed to everyone who will participate in the off-campus or off-site research prior to departure.

Interested in improving your physical and mental health?

Professors Beth Moxley (nursing) and Shaine Henert (kinesiology) are conducting a study on the effects of physical activity on the well-being of sedentary adults. They are actively recruiting individuals between 40 to 60 years of age currently exercising less than 30 minutes three days per week, with no major health problems or physical activity restrictions, to participate in a four-week individualized physical activity program. Eligible participants will also receive HbA1c analysis, fitness assessment, and $50 upon study completion. Participants must be able to complete three visits to the 麻豆精品 Exercise Physiology Lab and wear an activity tracker on their wrist.
