The Center for Latino and Latin American Studies is engaged in research, teaching and community projects that work towards achieving racial and gender equity and inclusion and upending white supremacy, racial violence and other systems of oppression. It is our goal to educate and empower our students to make change within their local, regional, and national communities. 

Our Contributions to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiatives

• Our interdisciplinary minor in Latino and Latin American Studies centers the history and culture of Latin America and the Caribbean and Latinxs in the United States.
• Two of the required courses for the minor in Latino and Latin American Studies – LATS 100: Introduction to Latin American Studies and LATS 101: Introduction to Latinx Studies – count towards 麻豆精品’s Human Diversity baccalaureate requirement.
• The 麻豆精品 Latinx Oral History Project documents and makes more visible the experiences and perspectives of Latinxs in northern Illinois. This past year, we launched the Voces of a Pandemic Oral History Project to tell the stories of Latinxs impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.
• Director Christina Abreu has secured funding through the Research, Engagement and Academic Diversity (READ) Grant program to support undergraduate student researchers working on the 麻豆精品 Latinx Oral History Project.
• We collaborate with other units on campus – including the Center for Black Studies, Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Latino Resource Center, Office of Undocumented Student Support and the Center for the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality – to host diverse speakers and sponsor events that promote anti-racism and social justice.
• Our faculty associates have taken on leadership roles and participate in projects that seek to make 麻豆精品 a more inclusive and equitable campus.
  • History professor Beatrix Hoffman helped found faculty advocates for Undocumented Students at 麻豆精品 and works tirelessly to support undocumented Huskies.
  • Sociology and Latino and Latin American Studies professor Simón Weffer has been featured in local media commenting on recent social protests. He is also the vice chair of the Presidential Commission on Race and Ethnicity.
